We invite your organization to partner with us in building a compassionate, sustainable, and cage-free world for parrots. Together, we can establish India’s first of its kind Bird Hospital, to spread awareness, and protect thousands of innocent lives in Bhopal.
The story of Mission Pankh began in 1999 with a dream. It was the vision of Mrs. Laxmi Shah, mother of the founder Mr. Dharmendra Shah, who imagined a world where parrots would no longer be confined to cages but would soar freely in the open sky. Inspired by his mother’s dream, Mr. Shah dedicated his life to turning this vision into reality.
The path was not easy. with unwavering determination, Mr. Shah personally went door to door, requesting people to free the parrots they kept in captivity. His noble efforts were often met with ridicule, rejection, and even threats. Yet, he never wavered, firmly believing that every bird deserves freedom.
Over the years, his perseverance paid off—Mr. Shah successfully liberated more than 20,000 parrots from captivity. What began as a single dream soon transformed into a movement, a mission to give wings to those who cannot speak for themselves.
Parrots are meant to fly in the open sky, not to be locked away for human entertainment. Caging them is not only cruel but also shortens their natural lifespan. While a parrot in the wild lives 40–50 years, a caged parrot’s life expectancy reduces drastically to 8–12 years.
Inside cages, parrots often become depressed, lose their ability to fly, and may even harm themselves by hitting their beaks against the mesh. They are social beings with families of their own—capturing one parrot devastates its flock, disturbs ecological balance, and contributes to population decline.
To understand the cruelty: the average wingspan of a parrot is 25–28 inches, yet the standard cage size in India is only 12–18 inches, making it impossible for them to stretch or fly.
In India, parrots are protected under Schedule IV, Entry 50 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. This law strictly prohibits trapping, keeping in captivity, or selling them. Violators can face up to three years of imprisonment, a fine of ₹25,000, or both.
-Despite this, the illegal parakeet trade continues to thrive across the country, primarily due to lack of awareness. The first step toward ending this cruelty is stopping the demand, which is possible only through mass awareness campaigns.
Every voice, every effort, and every act of kindness matters. By supporting Mission Pankh, you are not just saving birds—you are preserving species, restoring ecological balance, and upholding the principle that freedom is a birthright of all living beings.
Together, we can give these innocent creatures what they rightfully deserve—freedom, dignity, and the limitless sky to fly in.
